All About the Kentucky Lottery
The Kentucky Lottery was established in 1988 with more than a million Kentuckians voting yes on the lottery referendum, and a 60% approval vote from the state official. Ticket sales began the following year and with the Kentucky Lottery registered as a corporation making them the first in the United States to do so.
The Kentucky Lottery contributes a significant amount of money to the Commonwealth Fund with the 2007 fiscal year reporting $196.2 million in proceeds. This money is used for the state by upgrading public buildings, increasing services for public schools and many other projects and developments for the state of Kentucky.
In early 2007, the Kentucky Lottery launched its first raffle game called the “Million Dollar Draw” . This was a huge hit from day one with players having a shot at winning a top prize of $1 million with a 1 in 250,000 odds to do so. It was such a success that the lottery sold out in tickets after only eight weeks on the market.
Today, the Kentucky Lottery holds 6 online games including the Powerball along with multiple scratch off games and pull tabs.
The Pick3 is played just like all the other Pick 3 games across the nation except the Kentucky Lottery Pick3 offer you a higher payout on your dollar. A $1 ticket can win you up to $600 and you can even buy a 0.50 ticket giving you a top prize of $300. To play you will need to choose three numbers between 1 and 9 either by filling out a play slip or asking the store clerk for a quick pick. You will then have to pick how you would like your ticket to be wagered with either one of the three basic game options or you can choose a pair game.
The Basic Games gives you three options
Straight – To win match the winning numbers in the exact order they were drawn
Box – You can match the three numbers in any order
Straight/Box – You can win by matching your numbers in the exact order or any order.
The Pair Games allows you to win by matching only two numbers
Front Pair – Match the first two numbers exactly as was drawn
Back Pair – Match the last two numbers exactly as was drawn
Split Pair – Match the first and third number in the right order
The Pick3 is available Monday through Saturday and can be found at all supporting lottery retailers.
The Kentucky Lottery also features another daily game called the Pick 4 which is almost identical to the Pick 3 except you are choosing four numbers. This also means that the prizes are a lot bigger than the other game. With the Kentucky Pick 4 you can win up to $5,000 daily by matching all four numbers drawn in the exact order.
To play you will need to choose your four numbers from 1 through 9 along with the way you want your ticket wagered. You will be asked to choose between a Straight, Box or Straight/Box. This game is available Monday through Saturdays and tickets cost as little as $1.
Straight – To win you must match all four numbers in the same order as they were drawn.
Box – This option allows you to match the foru winning numbers in any order
Straight/Box – You can win by matching all four numbers either in the exact order or any order.
Cash Ball costs $1 and offers the chance of winning a top prize of $200,000 available three times a week. The game is available at all participating lottery retailers and is state-wide. To play, you will need to pick 4 numbers between 1 and 33 and then one number from 1 and 31. The single number is your Kentucky Cash Ball number and is played as a bonus.
To win you can match 1, 2, 3, or 4 of your numbers either with the Cash Ball number or your regular numbers. Even if you match 0 numbers you can still win. This game can be purchased for $2 per board and played up to 14 days in advance.
Win For Life
Win For Life is the newest edition to the online games with the chance to win $1000 a week for life. Each ticket costs $1 and provides you with six numbers from 1 through 42. Simply match all six numbers to win the top prize and receive a weekly check from the Kentucky Lottery each week for the rest of your life.
The Win For Life also combines a bonus number called the “Free Ball”. If you match five numbers plus the Free Ball you will win a $1000 a year for life.
3 Line Lotto
This game gives you three chances to win with 6 numbers to choose for only $2. You can select from numbers 1 through 39 and as a bonus you receive your two additional lines at no extra cost. Every night from Tuesday to Friday six numbers will be drawn, match numbers 3, 4, 5, or 6 numbers and you will win a prize. If you match all six numbers on one line you win the jackpot which starts at $100,000 and increases each draw until it is won.
Scratch Offs have always been a top seller for the Kentucky Lottery and with the newest ticket the Payday Doubler players get a two tickets for $5. The second ticket is available on the back of the first one. The top prize in this game is $50,000 with a chance to win up to 20 times on both tickets.
During 2007, the Kentucky Lottery broke records in all departments with over $744 million in sales, and $439 million of that was for scratch off tickets alone. They gave back more than $190 million to the state of Kentucky and over $6 billion was won by players in prizes.
