The Washington D.C Lottery Lottery
All About the Washington D.C Lottery Lottery
The Washington D.C Lottery was created in 1982 with a mission to “provide District residents with financial benefits through the sale of lottery products and support of charitable organizations pursuant to gaming regulations”. The Washington DC Lottery has been able to do this by creating the General Fund and the Charitable Games Department which has provided residents with over $1.8 billion dollars since its inception. These funds have allowed the state to provide economic relief where needed along with supporting public services such as education and public housing. In the 2006 fiscal year, the Washington DC Lottery provided over $73 million to the General Fund, which was the largest single contribution the lottery has made since they started over 20 years ago.
The Charitable Games Department provides licensing to non-profit organizations to help raise money for special funding that would otherwise not be made available. The licenses provided to these organizations are for such things as bingo halls, raffle draws, pull tabs and Monte Carlo Night parties. Through these events, non profit organizations have been able to raise over $800 million collectively. These funds have been used towards housing, food, shelters and other necessities that the residents of the state need.
In addition to the money transferred over to these departments tha player are rewarded as well. A minimum of 50 percent of all revenue generated by a lottery ticket is used towards prizes for players. As a matter of fact, in 2006 the Washington D.C Lottery awarded a record breaking $146.6 million in prizes to players. This is the largest amount of winnings from all players the lottery has seen since they started.
